Instructions
Step 1
- Identify where you will have the stage and let youth know.
- Say, “We’re going to act out a scene without using words, this is called pantomiming. The scene could be at the beach, at the park, at a basketball game, at the pool or any other place you can think of.”
- Ask youth if anyone has an idea for a scene.
- If youth do not have any ideas, ask for a volunteer and whisper an idea for a scene to them.
- You could also have scene examples pre-written on folded slips of paper and then instruct youth to take one for their scene idea.
- Ask youth not to say what their scene is out loud, but to say it quietly to you.
- Say, “Our first actor will start the secret scene. When you think you know what scene they are doing, raise your hand and I will call on you one at a time to join the scene. When you join, you should join as a new character. For example, if you think the first actor is hitting a baseball, you could be a pitcher throwing them a ball.”
- Remind youth that they should act out the scene using only gestures and actions – they shouldn’t talk.
Step 2
- Ask the first volunteer actor to start the scene. Remind them to stay the same character throughout the scene.
- Wait a few moments to see if anyone raises their hand to join the scene.
- Say, “Remember, when you think you know what the scene is, raise your hand and I will call on you to join.”
- Select one youth at a time to add to the scene, giving each a chance to show who or what their character is.
- Add more youth to the scene as they volunteer.
- When the scene has played for a while and/or there are five to eight people in the scene, count down by saying, “Three, two, one, FREEZE!”
- Remind youth to freeze in whatever position they were in last.
Step 3
- Ask the last youth who joined the scene what scene they thought they were acting in. Start by asking the last actor and then move on to the first. (Ask the first actor not to share information about the scene until the very end.)
- When everyone is finished sharing, ask the first actor to share what scene they created.
- Select a new actor to start a new scene for as long as time allows.
