Youth create a group poem about important aspects of who they are.
This can also be a spoken work experience as you practice with poetry.
Step 1
- Say, “We’re going to create identity poems based on some of our past experiences. We will write four lines in our poems.”
- Read the prompts aloud, noting that each line should begin with, “I am from ... ” and the answer to the prompt. Example:
- I am from Fourth of July fireworks by the river
- I am from the beach, my room and Nonni’s house
- I am from love you to the moon
- I am from strawberry rhubarb pie
- Ask youth if they have any questions before they begin.
Step 2
- Give youth about 10 minutes to draft their poems.
- Support youth with any questions they have about the prompts.
- Allow youth to write multiple versions, if they choose and if time allows.
Step 3
- Ask for any volunteers who may want to read their poems aloud.
- Write your own poem as an example to share as well.
- Provide recognition and gratitude for any youth who share.
