Instructions
- Have participants stand in a circle.
- Say, "Today we are going to play a game called Gotcha. Listen closely to my instructions. You will have to be quick on your feet and with your hands!"
- Instruct youth to:
- Put their arms out to the side.
- Put their left hand palm-side up.
- Keep their right index finger pointing down and touching their neighbor's outstretched palm.
- Ask, "Is everyone connected?"
- Observe participants' poses, and make corrections if needed.
- Say, "Hold your pose and listen up!"
- Explain when you say "Go!" everyone should do two things:
- Grab the person's finger touching their left hand.
- Prevent their right finger from being grabbed.
- Exclaim, “1 ... 2 ... 3 ... [add suspense] ... Go!"
- Repeat these instructions several times.
- Dramatize the word "Go!" With the build-up of suspense, most will jump the gun, adding to the fun.
- Try a different trigger word, like "Cheese," and mention lots of other "eeze" words for humor - peas, sneeze, wheeze, please and freeze.
- After a few rounds, tell participants to take a seat and reflect on their activity.
- Ask some of the following questions.
- What was difficult about this activity?
- What strategy did you use to assist you?
- Did the activity get easier over time? Why? Why not?
- Tell me about a time in life you have felt the same anxiety.
- Tell me about a time you made an assumption about someone?
- Why can assumptions cause problems?
