Youth invent and share a new color.
Step 1
- Say, “We’re going to explore color today. Have you heard of warm and cool colors?”
- Warm colors are reds, oranges, yellows
- Cool colors are greens, blues, purples
- Say, “Color can also connect with certain feelings or emotions. Have you ever heard someone say, ‘I’m feeling blue’ when they are feeling sad? Here are some feelings that are connected to colors:
- Green – balance, harmony, acceptance
- Blue – calm, peace
- Purple – creative, fun, extravagant
- Red – passion, energy, powerful
- Orange – optimism, enthusiasm, expressive
- Yellow – fun, silly, logical.”
- Say, “Think about how you are feeling now. What color do you feel like?”
- Allow youth time to respond.
- Say, “Today you’re going to create a new color and name it!”
Step 2
- Ask youth to pick one main color and two mixing colors.
- Say, “Now you have the chance to play around with mixing colors and adding colors together to make a new color.”
- Allow youth time to create their new color by exploring how their colors mix together.
- Encourage youth to try a couple different color mixes, switching their colors as needed and adding different amounts of color to change the color.
- Allow youth as much time as available to create their new color.
Step 3
- Ask youth to name their new color when they have a color they are happy with.
- Ask youth to paint their name with their new color.
- Allow youth to share their new color and name.
- Provide recognition and gratitude for any youth who share.
