Instructions
- Explain to youth that today you will play a game called Angry Paper Toss.
- Tell youth to think about what situations make them feel angry or annoyed.
- Walk the group outside.
- Tape a large piece of white paper to the side of the building, on the sidewalk or on some other place where it can get wet.
- Have youth take turns selecting a marker and writing one thing that makes them feel angry or annoyed on the white paper. Alternatively, they can draw a picture.
- Distribute a napkin or a few sheets of toilet paper to each youth.
- Instruct participants to take turns dipping their napkin or tissue into the container of water and then throw it at the paper with grievances written on it.
- Ask youth:
- “Do you notice which napkins or tissues stick?” (Answer: Those that are wettest.)
- “What happens to the words and drawings once they get wet?” (Answer: They start dripping and fading away.)
- Take youth back inside, or find a suitable place to talk outside.
- Invite youth to take a seat.
- Ask the following questions to allow youth to reflect on the activity:
- How did it feel to write down the things that made you angry?
- How did it feel to toss the wet napkin (or tissue) at the things that make you angry?
- How did it feel to see the things that made you angry fade away?
- What are some other ways you can make your anger fade away, and calm yourself down?
